Maybe I need to pack the lower assembly more generously in grease, I have some moly grease that I think would be perfect for that.If you have a Garagistic shift knob and you want to install it on a factory BMW shifter, you'll need one of these adapters to install. I'm skeptic it will eliminate the noise completely since my DDM lower shifter has a kind of slack in it, I can rotate the whole assembly one or two degrees. Have yet to take the car out for a test but hope it will reduce the noise. I've since taken apart the new adapter and re-seated it into the DDM shifter making sure it went all the way in. Turned out the piece of the outer shifter boot I had cut to install the short throw shifter was upside down and sitting too high and preventing my new adapter from going all the way into the shifter. On looking ad the gearbox's lower shifter shaft (the DDM one that is there now) I noticed a mark from the set screw above the dimple that is meant for the screw. Making it so noisy that driving became uncomfortable. Never had isolated the noise to the shifter (My hearing indicated it came from higher up on the dash) but now that I've installed the new shifter the noise has increased tenfold so now I know the gearbox and shifter are the source of the issue. One problem is that I've had a "can of nails" rattle from my gearbox ever since I installed the DDM short throw shifter, it would come around 3500 RPM when accelerating and last until around 5000. I've come back form my week-and-a-half vacation to find the leather boot ready at the upholsterer. So if you can use a lathe or know someone that will do it for you for a low price, it's a way to go and you can customize it to your taste. I have yet to test drive the car but tried it out stopped and seems its right where I wanted it to be. I didn't measure yet but the shift knob is now around 3/4" - 1" higher than stock. Now I have to ask the upholsterer to make me a leather shifter boot (the OEM is a cheapie vinyl and the french stich threads were coming off).Īnyway, here's a few pictures. Ended up coming together rather nicely and worked like a charm the first try. ![]() Asked him to make me a 20cm long lever that would fit the OEM lower lever, and on the other end turn it with the smaller M10 thread on the end for the knob and the M12 thread right below for the trim piece. Both are threaded (the knob at M10 x 1.5mm and the trim piece at M12 x 1.25mm), so I got the OEM inside lever that I replaced with the DDM short throw and took it to the machinist. I also found a small black anodized billet aluminum trim piece to go underneath the shifter. So, last week while searching a knob replacement for my other car which is my daily, i ended up finding this Civic VTR inspired shift knob for the Honda Jazz/Fit. But the long game for me with the short throw shifter was to be able to extend the shifter a little, have a longer lever but avoid it being all over the place with the factory longer throws. ![]() Loved the shift feel although a little on the heavy end of the spectrum for me.
